Health & Safety Support for Mechanical & Electrical Businesses

Practical, qualified health and safety support that fits the way M&E businesses actually work from RAMS and audits to accreditations and technology.

We understand the risks M&E businesses face

Mechanical and electrical work carries real and varied risk. Your teams may be working with live or isolated energy systems, pressurised pipework, gas or refrigerants, at height, in confined spaces, or carrying out hot works often on sites where multiple contractors are working at the same time and conditions change quickly.

The law expects employers to manage these risks properly. Under health and safety legislation, including the Electricity at Work Regulations, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, the Work at Height Regulations and PUWER, M&E businesses have duties to assess risks, put controls in place, maintain equipment and ensure their people are competent to do the work safely.

Safety Assistance works with M&E contractors and firms across the UK from small specialist subcontractors to larger multi-discipline businesses helping them manage their legal duties, produce the documentation they need and achieve the accreditations that help them win contracts.

We work as an extension of your team, not as an external auditor looking for problems. Our aim is to make health and safety practical, proportionate and manageable for your business.

What we can help with

Accreditation support for M&E contractors

Many M&E businesses need CHAS, SafeContractor, Constructionline or another SSIP accreditation to get on approved supplier lists and win contracts. The application process can be time-consuming, and gaps in documentation are a common reason for delays or rejections.

Safety Assistance can help you prepare and submit applications, review your existing health and safety documentation, identify gaps and put the right records in place. We have hands-on experience supporting businesses through CHAS, SMAS Worksafe, SafeContractor, Constructionline, SSIP and RISQS the last of which is particularly relevant for M&E contractors working in the rail sector.

We also support ISO 45001 the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems for businesses that want or need a more structured, auditable approach.

The goal is not just to get you through the assessment. It is to make sure your health and safety arrangements are genuinely sound, so that accreditation reflects what you actually do rather than being a paper exercise.

Technology that makes safety easier to manage

If your business is still relying on Word documents, shared drives or paper forms to manage RAMS, inspections and records, Safety Assistance can help you move to something more practical.

Fast RAMS is a mobile-first app designed for engineers, supervisors and contractors who need to produce risk assessments and method statements quickly on site, before work starts, without going back to the office. It guides users through a structured process, includes pre-populated hazards and control measures, and produces a professional PDF that can be signed digitally and shared straight away. The free tier allows one RAMS document; the Unlimited plan is available at £9.99 per month.

Safety Mate® is a broader health and safety management platform covering inspections, audits, COSHH records, equipment checks, incident reporting, training records, corrective actions and more. It works on web and mobile, supports offline working, and can be configured for single sites or multi-site operations. Both products include AI-assisted drafting to help speed up document creation outputs are drafts for a competent person to review and approve before use.

Safety Mate® is available as a standalone product or alongside a consultancy service, so you can use it whether or not you take on a retained advisor arrangement.

Common questions from M&E businesses

Do we need a competent person for health and safety?

The law requires employers to appoint one or more competent persons to help them meet their health and safety duties. For many M&E businesses, particularly those without a dedicated in-house health and safety resource, appointing an external competent advisor is a practical and cost-effective way to meet this requirement. Safety Assistance can act as your appointed competent person, providing ongoing advice, documentation support and regulatory updates. Clients receive a certificate of appointment as a standard deliverable.

Can you help us get CHAS, SafeContractor or Constructionline approved?

Yes. We have experience supporting M&E businesses through CHAS, SMAS Worksafe, SafeContractor, Constructionline, SSIP and RISQS applications. We review your existing documentation, identify what is missing or needs updating, and help you prepare a submission that accurately reflects your health and safety arrangements. We are also a Once For All approved partner, which covers several of these schemes through a single platform.

We already have some health and safety documents - can you review and update them rather than start from scratch?

Absolutely. We are happy to work with what you already have. We will review your existing risk assessments, method statements, policies and procedures, identify any gaps or areas that need updating, and work with you to bring them up to the standard required. There is no need to discard work that is already in good shape.

How does Fast RAMS help our engineers on site?

Fast RAMS is designed for people who need to produce RAMS quickly, directly from site, without needing to go back to an office or wait for someone else to write the documents. Engineers and supervisors can work through a guided process on their phone or tablet, select relevant hazards and controls, add personnel and equipment details, and produce a signed PDF in under 10 minutes. It is particularly useful for M&E teams who move between sites and need documentation ready before work starts.

Do you work with M&E subcontractors as well as main contractors?

Yes. We work with businesses of all sizes across the M&E sector from sole traders and small specialist subcontractors through to larger multi-discipline firms. Whether you need help with a specific piece of documentation, ongoing competent advisor support, or a full health and safety management system, we can tailor our support to what your business actually needs.
